National Clearinghouse for Science, Technology, and the Law (NCSTL) at Stetson University College of Law Online Resource: This extensive online resource includes the world's only searchable comprehensive bibliography on law, science and technology. It contains court decisions and commentary, scholarly publications, commercial applications, professional associations and institutions, and other resources about traditional and new forensic topics, including important topics such as, Identity Theft, Intra and Interstate Tracking of Sexual Predators, Canine Sniff Detection, and Less Than Lethal Technologies. The database contains 18 resource categories for each of 33 topics in science and technology. At present, it contains over 103,000 records, of which over 3,000 are multimedia records. Over 1,300 entries a month are added. Total number of website visitors since NCSTL opened in 2003 is more than 170,200 from 133 different countries. In addition, comprehensive Cold Case and Identifying the Missing resources have recently been added to the site. No other such national resource exists. The online resource also includes It's Evident, a quarterly newsletter which focuses on the latest topics such as Methamphetamine, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Cyber Forensics, Post-Conviction DNA Testing, Bioterror and the Physician, and Virtual Autopsies. The newsletter is frequently cited in publications across the country. NCSTL MEDIA COVERAGE introduced the NCSTL to the public: ♦ Roanoke Times, Anjali Swienton, Director of Outreach, was interviewed by the Roanoke Times on June 30, 2010 on forensic evidence and how it links a Harrington homicide with a 2005 Fairfax, VA abduction case. The interview was published on July 2, 2010. ♦ HOUSE M.D., Kevin Paget, Research Attorney, was contacted by a researcher/writer from the Emmy award-winning medical TV show, HOUSE M.D., in May to inquire about ghosting, a form of identity theft in which the perpetrator steals the identity of the dead. Paget had authored the article, Ghosting … grave robbery for the 21st century for the April, 2008 issue of It's Evident. NCSTL PRESENTATIONS were made in diverse professional fora: ♦ "NCSTL's Work At A Glance", poster presented by Susan Zucker, Director of Technology & Distance Education, at the NIJ Grantee Poster Session on June 15, 2010 in Washington, DC. ♦ "NCSTL's Work", poster session at American University Washington College of Law on May 12, 2010 in Washington, DC. ♦ "The CSI Effect in Jury Trials", NCSTL Director Carol Henderson made a presentation at the University of Florida's Caleb and Michele Grimes Conference on Liberal Arts and Public Affairs for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on April 7, 2010 in Gainesville, FL. NCSTL PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES participated which directly relate to NCSTL research areas: ♦ CAPITAL LITIGATION TRAINING, NCSTL will be conducting a third training for prosecutors and defense attorneys on July 8-9, 2010 at The Center for American and International Law (CAILAW)in Plano, TX. ♦ NEW PARTNERSHIP - NCSTL is pleased to announce its newest partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa, FL. Currently, MOSI is featuring the exhibit, CSI: The Experience, and NCSTL is a part of that. |
