DR. HELENA RANTA: FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN KOSOVO OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FREE ADMISSION DATE: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2004 TIME: NOON LOCATION: STETSON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW, Classroom A 1401 61st Street South, Gulfport, FL Dr. Helena Ranta is the Coordinator, Disaster Victim Identification and International Missions, and Forensic Odontologist, Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Helsinki. Dr. Ranta is internationally known for her human rights work. She has been interviewed worldwide. She testified at the trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic at the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague. Dr. Ranta and her missions have been the subject of BBC documentaries. Her international missions include: Project Manager for the Finnish Forensic Expert Team (Srebrenica and Tuzla, BiH) under the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Forensic Odontologist for the Repatriation of Finnish Soldiers killed in action during WW2 in the USSR, Finnish Ministry of Education Team Leader for the European Union Forensic Expert Team (Kosovo), Chief Investigator of Klecka, Racak and Volujak Forensic Expert, Federation Internationale des Ligues des Droits de lHomme (FIDH), Cameroon Senior Advisor to President Ahtisaari, Jenin FactFinding Team, United Nations SecretaryGeneral Team Leader, Finnish Forensic Expert Team, The Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Lima, Ayacucho, Totos, Peru Forensic Odontologist, Member of the Identification Commission of the m/s Estonia ferry disaster Dr. Ranta graduated with a Doctor of Dental Science in 1972 and a PhD Degree in 1978 from the University of Helsinki. She has published over 60 articles on molecular biology, microbiology and electron microscopy, forensic medicine, forensic odontology and international humanitarian law. She is a Board member of the Finnish League for Human Rights and a member of the Advisory Board for International Human Rights Affairs to the Finnish Government.
