The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) was established in 1979 by a small group of nurses as a means of measuring the attainment of "emergency nursing knowledge." Certification examinations exist for flight nurses and transport nurses. Certification requires expertise in areas such as medical emergency tasks in dealing with communicable diseases, disaster management plan for weapons of mass destruction, and environmental emergency plan for patient illness due to exposure to hazardous materials.
